On Sunday 30th January, I kicked off the 1st of the 'Great Yarmouth Monthly' beach cleans as part of the Marine Debris Campaign!
You may already know that I'm a volunteer for Sea Shepherd as well as other charities (seal rescue with BDMLR, seal warden for FoHS).
I was joined by 25 volunteers, where we collected 5 full bin bags of litter which weighed a total of 39kg. Plus some wooden planks, a large piece of rusty metal and a plastic pole (probably another 10-15kg as a guestimate).
The weather was nice and sunny, it was actually fairly warm for the time of year (10°C)!
The monthly beach cleans at Great Yarmouth, North Denes will be on every last Sunday of the month until August (10am-12pm), check out Sea Shepherd UK events for upcoming beach clean dates to sign up!
Remember to download the ‘Marine Debris Tracker’ App via the link below ahead of the beach clean event(s): https://debristracker.org/
Being a citizen scientist is important for making change happen!
But first we need to collect regular data on litter collected to work out trends, amounts and types of litter in an area and ultimately from this data we can look into solutions for litter prevention.
It's voluntary, so you're not obligated to do it, but it's an important process which is invaluable. It's a simple app to complete and we'd ask for you to complete it during the beach clean.
